We are touched by the stories of children who are helped through this amazing organization, like Calgary's own Aizad Bilal.

Story by Lindsay Cumming, for Calgary, AB, Canada / (CKRY FM) Country 105

"September 27, 2011 was a day his family will never forget. Aizad was walking home from school when one of his prized Pokemon cards blew out of his hand as he was crossing the street. As he stopped to pick it up, he was hit by a truck. Aizad’s injuries were so devastating that when his mom arrived on scene, she could only recognize him by his shoe, lying on the road nearby.

He was rushed to the Alberta Children’s Hospital where experts in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) quickly began working to save his life and literally put him back together. His injuries were devastating — his heart had stopped beating, he had a brain bleed, eight broken ribs, a punctured lung, spleen damage, broken legs, broken wrists and a severed spine. He also broke every bone in his face. For the first two weeks, his family wasn’t sure if he would survive.

Aizad spent three weeks in the ICU before being moved to unit 4. He endured multiple reconstructive surgeries, required a feeding tube to help him eat and for weeks, could only communicate using a white board. With his loving family and dedicated team of caregivers by his side, Aizad relearned how to walk, talk and eat by mouth and three months later, proudly walked out of the hospital on his own two feet in December, and was back in school by January. Today, the Grade 10 student is back to his comical, charming self and enjoying life as a typical teenager – except for the fact he actually enjoys math class! His family calls him a walking miracle."
