When the eyes of the world turn to Sochi, Russia for the Winter Olympics in February of 2014, certainly the hearts of Calgary citizens will turn their own moment beneath the glow of the Olympic Flame back in 1988. And no doubt as the 2014 Olympics unfold, television viewers worldwide will be treated to images of Calgary's unforgettable Games. From the beauty on ice of Canada's own Brian Orser and Elizabeth Manley, to the heartbreak of America's Dan Jansen, to the colorful character of the Jamaican bobsled team, Calgary served as the backdrop for numerous memorable moments for two weeks.
And for those of us who live here or in one of the city's outlying areas, Calgary serves as the backdrop for a wonderful life.
Though Calgary is one of the five largest municipalities in all of Canada, it upholds a unique charm that keeps it from feeling like a congested urban sprawl. Whether your recreational interest is hockey, skiing, or the rodeo, Calgary is the kind of place that caters to numerous outdoor enthusiasts throughout every season of the calendar year. Calgary also boasts four highly respected hospitals, a first-class zoo, and the much acclaimed Telus Spark science museum.
Additionally, Calgary is the proud cornerstone of Alberta's incredibly strong economy, which a recent article in The Calgary Herald referenced as being Canada's fastest growing economy. According to the article, Todd Crawford, senior economist with The Conference Board of Canada, states that, "Alberta’s outlook is so exceedingly bright right now in the context of all the risks that we’re seeing going on in the world. We’re seeing Alberta coming off two years of exceedingly strong growth."
Indeed, the future of Calgary looks truly luminous.
